• It is easy to carry a DVD o a friend's place and watch it on his TV. But things are not that easy when it comes to video downloads. Certain movie files will not work on Sony HDTV. Further movies downloaded from iTunes will work only on devices with Apple software.
• Hollywood and consumer electronics makers are concerned about this issue and fear that consumers wil not prefer to buy TV shows and video movies until they can carry it along with them and watch them at any plac where ever they want. Hence, Hollywood movie makers and high tech engineers are working on the Digital Future.
• Hollywood Studios have been trying to address this problem through an organisation called Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem or DECE.. The group is trying out to create a common digital standard that would allow consumers to buy or rent a digital video once and then play it on any device.
• Under the proposed system the proof of buying a digital video woild be stored in a online locker and the consumers will be able to play the videos on any DECE compatible devices. Consumers can buy Blu rays and store copies of digital discs of the video movies or games which can be accessed by them from any of their devices including mobile phones and PCs.

Apple stays ahead with iPhone 3.0 OS

• Apple iPhone 3.0 OS has ultimately arrived with much more features as compared to its predecessors. This 3.0 OS can even make even the iPhones which were even 2 years old into a brand new one.
• Once the new Apple 3.o OS is loaded into the iPhone it becomes faster in snapping photos and sending messages. But beware that any os slows down with the passage of tume.
• The Apple iPhone 3.0 OS has added feature of search capabilities. Apple added Spotlight a system wide search bar that you can access by swiping to the left of the primary spring board screen or by pressing the home button twice slowly. A search bar appears on the top of the blank black screen and you can type in a word to perform the search operation.
• Apple also has added mail search application which helps you to search through e-mails which are still in the server and not downloaded by the iPhone.
• Apple 3.0 OS has made the functions of cut/ copy/ paste extremely user friendly. To apply this function you have to simply double tap on a screen where you want to copy some text. A bubble appears asking you whether you want to cut or copy. A box encapitulates the area you tapped. Drag the corners of the box to cover the area you wish to copy. To paste you launch the app at the app at the area you want to paste. Double tap again and hit paste.
  
• Apple 3.0 OS has added a landscape mode to its iPhone e-mail, SMS and Notes applications.
  
• The iPhone 3.0 also comes with a voice memo audio recorder. You can record and play the songs in MPEG-4 and alka . mp4a formats.

iPhone 3.0 and possible new Apple handsets at WWDC

Apple is expected to begin a summer smartphone battle by announcing details of updated software for the iPhone and new versions of the handset.

Thousands of customers and developers are gathering for the annual Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco, which the company has used in the past couple of years to launch updates to the touchscreen mobile phone.

Apple is thought likely to announce at least one new handset with up to 32 gigabytes of memory, video recording, a better camera, a compass, and improved battery life. Rumours on technology blogs suggest that the new version may be called the iPhone Video.

It is also rumoured that Apple is considering releasing a stripped-down, cheaper version of the iPhone with as little as 4GB of memory and fewer features which would sell for as little as $99 (£62) in the US. Any new versions of the hardware are likely to go on sale in July.

Apple has sold more than 21 million iPhones in more than 80 countries since it was launched in 2007. It had about 10 per cent share of the worldwide smartphone market in the first quarter of this year.

Apple has said that it will give more details at the WWDC of the new iPhone 3.0 operating system, which will include the ability to cut and paste text and an improved search function. The new operating system will be released later in the summer and will be downloadable for current iPhone owners.

Apple will also showcase its new Snow Leopard operating system for Mac computers at the WWDC. Snow Leopard will come out later this year as Microsoft prepares to release its new version of the Windows operating system, used on 90 per cent of the world’s personal computers. Windows 7 will go on sale on October 22, Microsoft said this week.

“Apple is arguably still the leader without new iPhones, but having new iPhone hardware models would definitely help improve its competitiveness,”

The chief challenger to the IPhone in the US this summer will be the Palm Pre smartphone, which launches in the US tomorrow, and is expected to come to the UK later this year.

The Pre, which has received glowing reviews this week, has a touchscreen and a keyboard. Several leading figures at Palm formerly worked at Apple. Palm’s chairman, Jon Rubenstein, led the iPod development team until 2006.

Nokia, which has about 41 per cent of the world’s smartphone market according to Gartner, will begin shipping the much-anticipated N97 handset later this month to more than 70 countries.

The 3.5in touchscreen and qwerty keyboard phone will be available from mid-June in the UK.

Other smartphone models to be launched this summer include a new version of Research in Motion’s BlackBerry Storm touchscreen handset, as well as products from Samsung, Sony and HTC.

E3 2009: Sony launches new PSP Go handheld games console

Kaz Hirai, Sony’s president, jokingly called the launch of the PSP Go the “worst kept secret of E3”, after news of the announcement leaked online days ahead of the video games expo in Los Angeles. He made the announcement as Sony unveiled its forthcoming line-up of video games at E3 2009.

The device, which is half the size and wait of the original PSP console, features 16GB of flash memory, allowing users to store thousands of songs, photos and games on their console. It also has a slide-out control pad, and integrated Bluetooth, as well as a memory card slot to expand its storage limit.

They will also be able to download games and films from Sony’s PlayStation Store using the PSP Go’s built-in Wi-Fi capabilities.

Sony confirmed that the PSP Go would not have a slot for its proprietary UMD game disks, meaning users won’t be able to play old PSP games on it. However, Sony said that the PSP Go would be offered in addition to the existing PSP console, the slim, light PSP 3000, which is still compatible with UMD disks.

The PSP Go, which goes on sale on October 1, will cost around $250 (£150).

Sony hopes the new-look, ultra-portable device will appeal to casual gamers as well as Sony’s traditional fan base. Other handheld consoles, such as the Nintendo DS, have proved very popular with women and older gamers.

The PSP Go also pits Sony directly against Apple’s iPod touch device, which can play music and video, as well as surf the internet, and is building a reputation as a foremost mobile gaming platform, with a number of large publishers, including Electronic Arts, developing titles specifically for Apple’s gadget.

NEW IPOD SHUFFLE 4GB

When the iPod shuffle was first launched on an expectant UK public the response was a muted one. Yes one could now own an iPod for £100 but it seemed that all the nice bits had been snipped from the features list, the main absentee being any form of screen. So news of the new iPod shuffle has once again had all of us wondering what would turn up from the states ready for our review.

Opening the funky packaging reveals that rather unsurprisingly the iPod shuffle still lacks any form of screen. In fact apart from the form factor very little else has changed and that is brave move given that the micro MP3 player market has boomed in the last 20 months or so. You can now get a small 1gb MP3 player from any number of manufacturers that will have and FM radio, small screens (some are even OLED colour) and wider format compatibility. However Apple has seen fit to stick with basic playback of MP3, WAV and ACC files and basic USB storage, no screen, no FM radio, in fact one might argue no change.
